“MBBR System Upcoming at Egan Plant—A First for MWRD and Illinois,” WaterWorld
Summary: A new moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) system is set to be installed at the MWRD’s Egan Water Reclamation Plant in Schaumburg, IL. The system is the first of its kind to be implemented in the state. The MWRD awarded a contract to Kruger, a subsidiary of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, to improve treatment of centrate streams between WRPs in the region and to substantively reduce costs incurred in biosolids management. Currently, the Egan plant dewaters the biosolids from both the Egan and Kirie WRPs, producing a centrate stream with high ammonia concentrations. According to Kruger, the MBBR system will remove 75 percent of the ammonia and 65 percent of the total nitrogen in water reclamation processes. With a large percentage of nitrogen removed by the new system, effluent can be returned to the mainstream treatment process at Egan. This provides the MWRD with an ideal solution that treats waste streams resourcefully while lowering operating costs at the same time.
